International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

The Initiative PH invites you to hop in the global virtual event in observance of the second International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste is celebrated for the second time today, September 29, 2021.

A call to action is made for national and local authorities as well as private sectors and individuals, to prioritize actions and reduce food loss and waste and contribute to restoring and building back better agri-food systems.

Energy, land, water, and other resources used to produce food will go to waste when food is lost and wasted. Moreover, the disposal of food in landfills might lead to greenhouse gas emissions, which will contribute to climate change. This will also have a repercussion on food availability and food security as well as contributing to increasing the cost of food.

By observing the inaugural IDAFLW, the TIPH community, collectively, established a clear ‘call to action’ for each and every individual to solidify their efforts towards reducing food loss and waste; hence, guaranteeing food security for everyone, especially the most vulnerable. Taking tangible action on issues regarding food loss and waste is a crucial part of streamlining the way the world’s food is being manufactured, distributed, and consumed.
